We have plenty of AI ethics frameworks telling us what responsible AI should look like. What we don't have is a good way to examine what AI is actually doing once it's out in the world. That's where Value Sensitive Design becomes useful.


VSD, developed by Batya Friedman, gives us a structured way to look at how technology affects human values. It works through three investigations: conceptual (which values matter), empirical (what's actually happening to these values), and technical (how design choices create specific outcomes).


When you use VSD diagnostically rather than as a design prescription, you start seeing patterns that traditional ethics frameworks completely miss.


The Problem with Ethics Guidelines

Most AI ethics frameworks ask the wrong question. They ask "what values should AI systems embody?" when they should be asking "what values are AI systems actually affecting, and how?"


This matters because intentions and outcomes are very different things. An organisation can follow every responsible AI principle in the book and still deploy systems that systematically harm certain groups. Why? Because ethics guidelines focus on design-time commitments rather than operational reality.

Power Moves in One Direction

AI systems consistently advantage whoever controls them whilst reducing the agency of everyone else. If an algorithm makes decisions about your healthcare, employment, or freedom, you have very limited recourse to challenge it.


The surveillance infrastructure needed to power AI concentrates unprecedented knowledge about populations in institutional hands. Meanwhile, the people being surveilled can't see, understand, or contest what's known about them. That's not a bug. That's how the systems are designed to work.


Transparency Is Often Performance

When transparency conflicts with commercial advantage, competitive positioning, or security, guess which one wins? Not transparency.


Technical complexity gets used as justification for opacity rather than as a challenge to overcome. Many organisations do transparency theatre - superficial disclosures that look like openness but don't actually enable accountability or challenge.


You get explanations that technically qualify as transparent but tell you nothing useful about why the system made that decision about you.


Discrimination Scales Effortlessly

AI reproduces and amplifies existing biases. Proxy variables and training data encode historical inequalities. What looks like neutral optimisation is actually embedding political choices about whose interests matter.


Here's what makes this dangerous: discrimination that used to affect dozens of people now affects millions. And it operates continuously, not requiring repeated human decisions that might be challenged or questioned.


Privacy Becomes Impossible

We've normalised pervasive data extraction. The surveillance needed to power AI systems has gone from exceptional practice to ambient reality.


Individuals have little genuine choice. Opting out means losing access to essential services, employment opportunities, or social connection. Informed consent becomes meaningless when systems are opaque, terms incomprehensible, and alternatives non-existent.


Nobody's Responsible

Distributed technical infrastructures create situations where no single actor bears responsibility for harmful outcomes. When AI produces discriminatory results or makes wrong high-stakes decisions, everyone has someone else to blame.


Developers blame the data. Data providers blame the specifications. Deploying organisations blame the vendors. And the people who got harmed have nowhere to turn.


Design Choices Create These Outcomes

Here's the uncomfortable bit: these value violations rarely come from technical limitations or unforeseeable consequences. They come from choices about what matters and whose interests count.


Efficiency wins every time. When ethical values conflict with operational goals, systems optimise for what's easily measured - processing speed, cost reduction, consistency. Values that resist quantification like dignity, contextual judgement, or human connection get systematically ignored.


Metrics distort what they measure. Complex human attributes get reduced to quantifiable proxies. Educational achievement becomes test scores.


Employee potential becomes CVs parsed for keywords. Creditworthiness becomes algorithmic scores that encode historical discrimination. It looks rigorous and objective whilst completely missing what actually matters.


Deployment runs ahead of assessment. Most AI systems lack mechanisms for continuous monitoring of how they affect people across their lifecycle. Harms emerge gradually as systems adapt and contexts change, but there's no way for affected people to register concerns or challenge operations.


By the time negative impacts become undeniable, systems are embedded in critical infrastructure and extraordinarily difficult to change.


Short-term thinking creates long-term damage. Individual privacy violations seem minor until they enable pervasive surveillance. Algorithmic hiring efficiency seems valuable until entire demographics find themselves systematically excluded from opportunities.


Why This Actually Matters

Rapid AI deployment isn't just automating existing practices or making them more efficient. It's fundamentally reshaping what kinds of social relationships are possible, what forms of knowledge count as legitimate, and who holds power to make consequential decisions.

These Are Political Questions


The Uncomfortable Reality

Technology evolves faster than society's capacity to understand and respond to what it's doing. The evidence suggests we're not carefully designing systems to balance competing values.


We're allowing implicit defaults - efficiency over ethics, institutional convenience over individual rights, measurable proxies over human complexity - to shape society's foundational infrastructure.


The question isn't whether AI affects societal values. It demonstrably does, often in systematically harmful ways for people without institutional power.


The question is whether we'll make these value trade-offs explicit and subject to democratic deliberation, or whether we'll keep burying them in technical systems presented as neutral, inevitable, and beyond political challenge.


What VSD reveals is uncomfortable: rapid AI dissemination isn't neutral progress. It's systematic value erosion. The framework gives us tools to see what's happening. Whether we act on what we see is up to us.
